Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Replying to representations by the Commercial Motor Users' Association concerning the difficulties which would arise if the regulations dealing with the fitting of guard rails on commercial vehicles should come into force on January 1st next, as at present proposed, the Minister of Transport makes it clear that he is prepared to exempt existing vehicles from the requirements of these regulations, but, as at present advised, he is disposed to retain the requirements for vehicles registered for the first time after December 81st, 1932.

Motor Manufacturer as U.S. Secretary of Commerce.

It is learned that President Hoover has appointed a motor manufacturer to the post of Secretary of Commerce to the United States, Mr. Roy D. Chapin, who has succeeded Mr. Lamont in this important office, is the representative of the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce on the Highway Education Board, and was chairman of the sixth International Road Congress in Washington in 1930. He has had a long career in the motor industry, having been with the Oldsmobile company at the beginning of the century, and having become president of the Hudson Motor Car Co. before be was 30.

Tenders Required for Oils and Greases,

His Majesty's Trade Commissioner at Johannesburg reports that the South African Railways and Harbours Administration is calling for tenders, which have to be presented in Johannesburg by October 17th next, for the supply of about 68,000 gallons of lubricating oils and 14,550 lb. of cup grease, required during 1933.

Death of a Pioneer Operator.

The death has occurred at Wolsingham, County Durham, of Mr. R. P. Thompson, one of the pioneers of road passenger services in the north-east. Mr. Thompson was proprietor of the Weardale Queen Motor Services, working between Crook and Stanhope.

Commercial-vehicle Entries for Eastbourne's Concours cl'Elegance._

The names of entrants and makes of vehicle they are entering in the commercial classes of the third annual Concours d'Elegance, to be held at Eastbourne on Wednesday, September 7th, are given in a table appearing below.

Ryburn Transport Progress.

The capital of Ryburn United Transport, Ltd., of London and Bradford, has recently been increased by 125,000, and orders have been placed for a number of additional machines. The company informs us that the business of Sureway Transport Co., 11a, High Street, Manchester, has been purchased, together with a number of small vans used for collection and delivery work, whilst the Sheffield Express Delivery Co., which has a local collection and delivery business, has been taken over, also a large garage and goods depot.

The company is now making regular connections in London with the air services to the Continent and farther afield, and through rates have been agreed.

More Double-deckers for "East Kent."

The East Kent Road Car Co., Ltd., 'which has for some time been operating 16 Morris-Commercial Imperial 56seater buses, which have been giving a fuel return of over 7 m.p.g., has recently ordered a further 10 models of this type. The company also operates many other Morris-Commercial buses, including 34 Viceroy 24-seaters and 6 RP-type 20-seaters.

India Gives Preference Tariff.

Under the United Kingdom—India trade agreement, reached as a result of the Ottawa Conference, India will give

a per cent, tariff preference on certain classes of motor vehicle.

Joint. Meeting of Technical Institutes.

The first joint meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute and the Institute of Metals will be held in London from September 12th to 15th. Business sessions for the reading of papers will be held in the halls of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, in addition to which visits to works are being arranged, as well as social functions. It is expected that about 400 members will take part in the proceedings.

According to present .arrangements 31 papers will be read, 17 of them being in connection with the Institute of Metals. The visits include one to the Dagenham works of the Ford Motor Co., Ltd.

New Scammell Lorries Development.

Scammell Lorries, Ltd., High Holborn House, London, W.C.1, is arranging for the production at its Watford works of a light, three-wheeled, 10 h.p. tractor, which can be used either in conjunction with a two-wheeled trailer, the load being partly superimposed, or In conjunction with drays that have hitherto been drawn by horses.

New Rea Model Corning ?

It is possible that we may shortly see in this country a new Roe six-cylinder goods chassis, having a load capacity something over 2 tons. The model is alreadY available in America, but final details of its specification for this country cannot yet be announced by the British concessionnaire, Reo Motors (Britain), Ltd., Beaver Lane, London, Commer Distributor Appointment.

Commer Cars, Ltd., Luton, advises us that it has appointed the Cathedral Garage, College Green, Bristol, as its distributors for the county of Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire.
