• Scania Bus and Coach will launch a new low-floor bus chassis at the Coach & Bus 197 show at the NEC next week (9-11 October). The company will also be showing the new IB coach chassis.
• Peugeot increased sales of its light commercial vehicles in August by 341% over the same period last year. The firm sold 592 Partner vans and 415 Experts. Sales of the established Boxer and 106 vans were also up by more than 100%.
• Varity Perkins has signed a joint venture deal with Simpson & Company in Madras to produce up to 60,000 Perkins engines a year in India by 2000.
• Montracon is the latest company to use computer analysis to reduce the unladen weight of its trailers. Its new lightweight stepframe tipper 2000 models of up to 42m3 tip the scales at 5,800kg.
• TIP has supplied Greenock-based G&S International with 20 new refrigerated semi-trailers on a five-year contract. The Gray & Adams and Lamberet reefers have Thermo King fridge units with satellite-linked SMART control systems. they will be used to haul fresh fruit and vegetables from growers in Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece.
• The RAC has introduced a warranty scheme for new or used commercial vehicles: Commercial Vehicle Protector is available through dealers, for all sizes of vehicles. It offers mechanical and electrical insurance and European cover, with a contribution towards roadside assistance and vehicle hire.
