IT has taken only three years to transform what was once useless marshland on the north bank of the River Thames in Essex into one of the most modern oil refineries in the world. This is the Coryton refinery of the Vacuum Oil Co., Ltd., on which all file major constructional work will be completed before the end of the year.
Over 850,000 tons of crude oil are processed each year which means that 18,000 barrels of crude oil flow through the processing equipment each day. Every hour 2m. gallons of water are used and the power station can generate enough electricity to supply a town of 100,000 people.
What is known as the Thermofor continuous-percolation unit is shortly to be put into operation. In this process, clay is used to remove undesirable coloured matter and represents the final stage in the manufacture of lubricatingoil stocks. The Thermofor plant is said to be the only unit of its kind in the world.
