" I SAY these services are not adequate

/ because they are sub-standard. I ask for a standard service and not a perfect one; one that compares favourably in all respects with other services in the Metropolitan area," said Mr. R. King-Hamilton, appearing for Victoria Coaches (Leigh-on-Sea), • Ltd., at the resumed hearing of their appeal against the refusal of the Eastern , Licensing Authority to grant them a licence to operate an express service between Southend and London.

He was replyingto Mr. M. Holmes, counsel for the Railway Executive and Westcliff-on-Sea Motor Services, Ltd., who said that further developments on the London-Southend railway service should improve the existing facilities, which were already adequate.

Concluding, Mr. King-Hamilton said: "Every other town of importance in the Metropolitan Area has this form of alternative road service to the railway which we have not." .

COLLECTION OF THE LEVY

FOR 'vehicles to which the transport levy does not apply, the ordinary motor vehicle licence renewal form will continue to be used, says the London and Home Counties Division of the Traders' Road Transport Association.

For those that are liable to the levy, a modified version of the original application form for the licence duty for goods vehicles, Form R.F.4, will be used. This will be endorsed to the effect that Section B, which calls for full details of the vehicle, will not have to be completed in the case of vehicles previously licensed.

In Section A, the data for various weights of vehicles will be given, and additional columns will be inserted to show the amount of levy due. A final column will give the total amount due in respect of both the levy and licence duty.

It is understood that these forms will be available by the middle of this month.

OLDHAM LOSING ON 16 ROUTES QIXTEEN out of 27 services operated I.-) by Oldham Transport Department during the past five months showed a loss, according to figures given by the transport committee.

The department was carrying far fewer-passengers and, according to the chairman, CBE Holt, theatres and cinemas had fewer patrons. Whether television was going to do harm, he could not say, but people were not travelling to places of entertainment as they used.

Mr. C. P. Paige, general manager, said the situation had been discussed at managers' meetings, and it appeared to be general. It was thought that passenger traffic had passed its peak, as there was a slight decline throughout the country.
