AISTAKEN for a new vehicle wher1Ylever it goes, so its operator tells us, the E.R.F. outfit, shown -in an accompanying picture, has nearly 700,000 miles to its credit. It was renovated, moreover, in this haulier's own workshops.

Unable to obtain a new machine, Mr. Ivon Hatcher, of Totton, Southampton, who runs five vehicles under A licences, on work of national importance, acquired instead, from a timber haulier, an E.R.F. tractor, dated 1935. It was in bad condition, as may well be appreciated in view of its mileage.

With the aid of a fitter and a coachbuilder and sign-writer, he thoroughly overhauled it, including the Gardner • 51.‘V engine. A new cab was constructed, finished and lettered, and apparently a thoroughly good job made of it.

Originally a Scarnmell eight-wheeled solid-tyred attachment, the trailing unit depicted now has an Atkinson axle, taken from a Leyland Bull sixwheeled conversion, with wheels F:hok.1 with 40 by 8 twin tyres. Rear spring!, however, spring hangers, shackles, etc., are of E.R.F. make and are interchangeable with those of the tractive unit.

The platform is 28 ft. long and it is depicted carrying a 45-ft,. R.A.F. launch, the uppermost part of which, on the vehicle, is 16 ft. 6 ins, above road level.
