Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Mr X says its time to wake up tc challenges posed by global war, — but not by banning trucks.

All the evidence suggests that global warming is real and t the resulting climate change will be devastating that if WE don't change our ways we face economic and environme consequences that justify the term apocalyptic. Well, Armageddon bored... not of the hype but of no one doing anything about it. It's time we faced facts and stopped put footing round vested interests and off-loading the blame o scapegoats.

First. a few unpalatable facts. Our society is unsustainat great civilisations rise and fall and ours will probably die when the oil runs out, possibly far sooner than we expect.

Our means of distributing goods is not sustainable. It's based on oil and produces lots of poisonous gases. Trucks may be cleaner than they have ever been, but no manufactured mode of transport is free of the taint of environmental damage. Trains, electric cars... anything whic depends on burning fossil fuels is dangerous.

The problem is that we have nothing with which to replac these fuels. Had we followed Mr Diesel's original plans we'l all be running our trucks on vegetable oil. His vision was fo machines that ran on a cheap, endless supply of energy his pioneering engine was modified to run on mineral oil.

Its not too late. We need to tax motorists off the road beci there are way too many gas guzzling cars at a time. 40% a urban congestion is caused by motorists going to and frorr supermarket. Forget railways for freight; moving 5% of roe( freight onto the rails would require a doubhng of the rail net with huge infrastructural costs and loss of countryside. We should. however, boost services for passengers.

And we need to pressure manufacturers, oil companies governments to come up with a sustainable alternative to c Biomass, for instance, could provide huge amounts of che clean energy and engines must be developed that will run The problem is not trucksit's a refusal for society to face and act appropriately.

"Trucks may be cl than ever, but no m transport is free of environmental dam
