Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• MAN's 17.192 came with permanent four-wheel drive and a clever Goodyear on/off-road tyre selection. This kept the loaded 17-tonner moving on a track battered by days of testing Despite engine performance that was not as impressive as others in the group, the MAN made steady progress over stretches which sometimes taxed the less capable.

Like most of the vehicles in our test group, the MAN offered an easy-to-use six speed synchromesh transmission. The availability of cross and inter-axle difflocks ensured we kept moving no matter what. Selection was best made when staMAN's cab tionary although with care some choices

were possible at slow speed.

A (lockable) air-suspended seat and all the on-road comforts you j could wish made this a very civilised off-roader, and it was the quietness that impressed us most, With the windows closed and the recirculating ventilation system effectively keeping the dust out, the drive was the most carlike of the group.

Steering and handling were good; the well-matched driveline simply made the drive easier. Visibility is passable, although MAN's narrow mirrors are less then clear when bouncing along off-road.

Access to the high-mounted cab was generally good. Drivers will find this a comfortable and competent offroader, if only for the cab comforts. However, its upmarket on-highway interior might take a pasting once the dirt climbs aboard.
