Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

.:.11.43 Manchester Brigade made tests of its Dennis and Morris engines on the 25th and 20th ult. These took place in Albert Square, and many of the spectators were drenched with water.

It seems likely that there will be considerable competition to secure the order from Stockton-on-Tees, but Middlesbrough influences, to which we have already referred, appear likely to succeed.

Country-house Fires.

The Mansfield (Notts.) Town Council, following upon reports in regard to a recent fire at Debdale Hall, near Mansfield, has decided to consider the question of the provision of a motor fire-engine.

Bingley Asleep.

We are sorry to observe that the Bingley U.D.C. has decided not to purchase a motor fire-engine, after a very considerable debate, the motion being defeated by nip, votes to six. We suppose the Bingley councillors will be alive to their responsibility after the next serious conflagration.

Hull Wants Two.

The decision of the Hull Watch Committee, to purchase a motor fire-engine, has led to correspondenee in the local Press which is directed to show that two such engines, instead of one, should be purchased. It appears that the Hull Corporation is under an obligation to attend fires at Beverley, and that the increasing distances from the centre of the city to the city boundaries should also be considered as a present factor. At Folkest me.

In accordance with the instructions of the Watch Committee, the Superintendent of the Folkestone brigade has issued a report, as to its efficiency, in which he recommends the installation of a petrol motor " first turn out " machine at, a cost of approximately 21,000.

Insufficient Notice.

We are at a loss to understand why the Foots Cray U.D.C. gave fewer than ten days' notice of its desire to receive tenders for a motor vehicle equipped to carry a fire-escape. The conditions were advertised on the 19th ult., and

tenders had to be lodged not later than 9 a.m. on the 28th idem. Why was this course adopted 7

Stafford's Plight.

Stafford Fire Brigade is now. without horses, and it also appears to have got very little more forward with the proposals for the purchase of a motor fire-engine. The Chief or the brigade, CaptaiD Bell, in a speech at the mayoral dinner, al the Swan Hotel, Stafford, on the 25th ult., made the astonishing statement that " They had never been in a position to cope with a really large fire since he had belonged to the brigade."
