The Freight Transport Association has joined forces with Avon and Somerset police to issue guidance to night-shlft drivers on how to stay awake.

Last week, as part of a nationwide government road safety campaign, FIA staff and police handed out leaflets to dri

vers on the M5 near Bristol with advice on the hours rules and how to combat fatigue.

Over the past three years there have been 581 night-time collisions on the M5 between Avonmouth and Taunton, leading to 39 fatalities.

As driver fatigue continues to hit the headlines the FA has three other initiatives in the pipeline; • it is publishing a "memory jogger" card on the hours' rules which will be distributed to drivers via FTA members. The card, which will have a few hints about what to do to combat fatigue (such as drinking strong coffee or an energy drink), is something that drivers can keep in their cabs," says FTA head of European affairs, Chris Welsh.

III The FTA has also commissioned a chapter for its Drivers Handbook which will include guidance on avoiding the dangers of fatigue.

• And managers are being targeted with advice on strategies designed to help drivers stay awake. The FTA Driver Management Guide is due to be published later this year.

The moves follow a number of high-profile accidents in which drivers were found to be tired, such as the Newport driver who crashed into a car, killing a family of four ICM25 April-1 May).

Research has suggested that lack of sleep could be responsible for 20% of motorway accidents.
