Brewing giant Carlsberg-Tetley is to pioneer a driver assessment programme designed to cut insurance costs by singling out accident-prone employees. Nearly 2,000 drivers of the fleet of 340 drays and 740 cars and vans will be assessed over the next 18 months.

The Northampton-based company says its accident levels are unacceptably high— it hopes the Driver Assessment Training Aid Programme will help cut its premiums by 25% over the next two years. The programme involves answering multiple-choice questions which are linked to video clips.

The company spent almost a year developing the programme with its supplier, DriveTech (WO; 36 managers have been trained to supervise its use.

Chris Howell, who founded the programme, says: "Toe many fleets think the answer to their aim of cutting atwork road accidents is to send all staff on a driver training course." He concludes that in general only about 20% of the drivers in a fleet need re-training.
