Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Toby Clark • Czech manufacturer Skoda seems to have been reborn under the ownership of Volkswagen. and the first of a new range of car-derived commercials goes on sale next month. The Skoda Pick Up is based on the company's frontwheel-drive Felicia saloon and will compete against inexpensive models from Fiat, FSO and Tata—in fact Skoda hopes that it will revive the flagging pickup market.

The Pick Up is an attractivelooking half-tonne pickup with

a loadspace wide enough to accommodate a EuropaHet. The 1.3-litre petrol model arrives first, to be followed in October by a version fitted with VW's 64hp MI diesel, as fitted to the late Golf van and the new Seat Inca.

At the same time Skoda will launch the Cube Van, essentially a Pick Up with a well-made steel hardtop and rear sidehinged doors, turning it into an low-cost 2.4nr' high-cube van with a glazed bulkhead. This variant has already been seen at continental shows.

Also arriving in October will be the Van Plus, a five-door (hut two-seat) model with a 2.2m3 GRP body built on to the Felicia estate body. This replaces the Forman van, built on the earlier Favorit shell. Skoda may develop a five-seat variant with glazed doors to compete with Ford's Courier Kombi.

the interior alone. Its mouldings and fittings are as solid and well finished as a Wolfsburg product's and the cab is very comfortable. Noise levels are surprisingly low, and Skocla's installation of the 1.9 diesel could well be quieter than VWs.

The Pick Up handles and rides well laden or unladen and promises to be acceptable to drive all day. The load space is well thought out, with a double-skinned load bed, sidemounted load eyes and drain holes, though the tailgate does not drop down vertically and of course a dropsicle version would not be practical.

Whether it revives the market or not, the Pick Up will at least give buyers another option, and should sharpen up an already intense market.

7 A full road test of the Pick up will appearin CM dated 16-22 May.
