• The amount of goads carried by road in the UK and the distance travelled grew last year despite the recession and a declining number of vehicles, says a Department of Transport report.

Some 1,609 million tonnes were carried by road in )995, up from 1,597 in 1994. The annual total has risen by more than 100 million tonnes since 1991.
