THERE was little evidence in the 1958 " 1 Budget proposals that the Government were as enlightened on the need for preparing for .a European free-trade area as they, were about the conception of the area itself, said Mr. A. S. Dick, president of the Soc:ety of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, at the annual meeting last
week. ••
It was illogical, at a time when every effort must be made .to .consolidate and expand the motor industry's markets in Europe, that mannfacturers should be deprived by purchase tax from having all the benefits of the home market.
"We still have .a 3.0-per-cent. purchase tax on goods-vehicle chassis—capital industrial equipment — which should never have been imposed at all," he added.
He was unimpressed by the argument that because the industry was breaking new records, the need for relief was lessened.
SAUNDERS-ROE MAKING TANKS E'LLIPTICAL EpIkote-lined steel tanks. are • being made by Saund.:rs-Roe (Anglesey), Ltd., Beaurnaris, Anglesey, for Shell-Mex and B.P., Ltd , to carry all grades of petroleum product. The tanks are of welded construction in 12-gauge material and the four compartments have individual capacities of 527 gal., 632 gal., 527 gal. and 429 gal.
Length is 17 ft., width 6 ft. 9 in, and height 4 ft. Tanks are mounted on four cradles and held in position by straps. Each compartment has an Ernco cover. a 5-in. foot valve, and a dip tube and dipstick.
The tanks are mounted on A.E.C. Mercury chassis. and a Stollen and Pitt reversible pump is driven from a power take-off. Delivery may be either by gravity or pressure, it is stated.
£100,000 FROM FEES
FEES of 15s. to be paid for inspections, Iby owners of vehicles over 10 years old, will yield £100,000 in a full year— enough to cover the cost of administering the examination scheme—the Minister of Transport said.
