REMOVALS GIANT Pickfords is blaming over-capacity in the UK market for the loss of 80 jobs.
The redundancies will mainly affect management, but drivers could be hit by further cost-cutting measures following a meeting tomorrow (Friday 3 March).
MD Kevin Pick ford says price pressure and over-capacity triggered a formal review of the company's structure and resources by US-based parent Si rva.
"We need to make some significant changes to get us on track for growth and prosperity," he explains.
Tomorrow's meeting will be between Sirva bosses and unions representing hundreds of the company's drivers.
Roy Abrahams, divisional officer in the United Road Transport Union, says that the rationalisation programme wasn't entirely unexpected: "The company had been signalling for some time that they were in difficulty and to expect some costcutting exercises."
Pickfords employs 1,5(X) people in the U K. Last year it closed eight of its 93 depots, blaming falling demand in the housing market.
