Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A LIBERAL Democrats campaign to force truck drivers to park away from the high street of a Kent town has been branded "political opportunism" by one resident.

According to the website www.truckoff.org.uk, residents of Cheriton, near Folkestone, have been disturbed by the noise of reefer motors running through the night and the amount of litter allegedly dropped by drivers.

The website, set up by Shepway Liberal Democrats, says:-We have no argument with lorry drivers. They are performing a hugely important joh...However,Cheriton High Street is not the right place — there are no facilities, and it's too close to houses."

But resident Paul Inward says there has never been a problem with LG Vs parking in the high street. He claims the Lib-Dems have failed to address any longterm transport strategy in the area and that the issue is being used as a "political scapegoat".

Inward adds: "'flue local elections are just around the corner — that's what's driving this campaign... Many of the vehicles that use the lay-by are servicing Cheriton businesses."

But Peter Carroll, Liberal Democrat co-ordinator and owner of nearby Seymour Transport, disagrees: "Lorries park there at night; I've seen it myself. They churn up grass verges and knock over all the posts and bollards, and they run fridges at night near people's bedrooms. It's not fair on the residents."

He says the campaign will encompass lobbying for the development of a truck park. but adds there are difficulties in making it a priority for Kent County Council. christopheraindati@rbi.co.uk
