German truck giant MAN has unveiled targets for its UK business and a new engine for the US market. But it has played down rumours about Scania. Andy Salter reports.

Targeting UK for growth

MAN-ERF will be expected to make a bigger contribution to the German company's growth in 2006 than in 2005, according to MAN Nutzfahrezeuge boss Anton Weinmann.

Last year, MAN-ERF took a 9.4% share of the truck market above six tonnes GVW according to Wei nmann; the target for next year is 12%. Fie has earmarked the UK, France and Italy as the three main markets in Europe where he is looking for "a significant improvement in market share".

Speaking exclusively to Commercial Motor just a few hours after parent company MAN AG announced its financial returns for 2005, Weinmann explained that MAN-ERF had been through a major restructuring during the past two years in an attempt to stem the flow of losses from the UK operation. MAN-ERF was still unprofitable in 2005. Weinmann reported. but he adds; "We now have a strong foundation for profitable growth of our market share in 2006.

Commenting on MAN Nutzfahrezeuge's financial returns, he explains that 2005 was a record year for the truck division, with profits up 37%, revenues up 5% and truck production up 7.9% compared with the previous 12 months. "Last year, our factories produced 68,200 trucks," he reported. "We're predicting that the European truck market will rise by about 2-3% this year and I expect our production to exceed 70,000 units."

• MAN will complete its joint-venture deal with Force Motors of India at the beginning of April.

This deal will involve the production of a new range of trucks for the Indian market, including plans to export 24,000 trucks per year.
