Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The new Code of Practice on Safety of Loads requires that the headboard of trailers should be capable of supporting half the trailer's total payload without any signs of failure.

To meet this demanding specification, the new range of Crane Fruehauf COP headboards — offered as options on the company's standard range of platform and platform skeletal trailers — is constructed from 2in. x lin. x kin. corner verticals which also provide a capping for the headboard proper with radiused corners to prevent sheet damage. In addition, corner stanchions of pressed channel section, tapering from bottom to top and centre verticals using a fabricated 'I' section, again tapered, are used to provide the main strength requirement.

The centre verticals are fully welded to the main chassis sidemembers which are extended by 8in. for this purpose. The heights available on this new headboard are 2ft 6in., 4ft and 5ft — 2ft 6in. is the minimum recommended height. The centre vertical uses varying thicknesses of flange dependent upon the headboard height.

This design embodies the standard CF coupling box which gives full access to air and electrical connections and junction boxes, even when the trailer is fully laden.

Further details and prices are available from any representative of Crane Fruehauf Trailers or the Product Sales Office at the Oldham Division, Royton, Oldham, Lancashire, (tel 061-624 9551).

In addition, Crane Fruehauf Service and Equipment Ltd can upgrade existing headboards to meet the new recommendations.
