Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TETS have now been carried out on aShydraulic nut splitter recently introduced by J. W. Pickavant and Co.. Ltd., Bow Street. Birmingham. The tool, which has the designation MP -316, is strongly made and relatively compact, measuring about 9 in. overall. It can be used to split nuts of up to 0.812 in. across . the flats.

Open jaws at one end of the tool carry the hardened steel anvil and the hydraulically operated plunger. The hydraulic power is supplied through the rotation of a setscrew fitted in the other end of the tool.

There is not a great deal of mechanical advantage through the hydraulic operaition, apparently about 2 to 1, but the big benefit is that it allows the shank of the tool to be made slightly cranked. This means that it is easier to get at nuts on a flat or concave 'surface.

The nut splitter was found to be easy to use and capable of splitting nuts up to the size claimed. Trade price is £3 7s. 6d.

Tracing Strange Noises AN instrument designed to trace noise in machinery and engines and to pinpoint the source of these noises has been developed by Trimark, Ltd., 33 Hogback Wood Road, Beaconsfield, Bucks. It is called the Auto-Audio Fault Detector and consists of a small cylindrical case with a short probe on one end. Overall size is 74 in. long by in. diameter.

A single cell battery is contained in the case and, when the instrument is switched on (by extending the probe), the noise from any part touched by the probe is amplified through transistors and taken by a flexible lead to an earpiece. The earpiece and the lead are housed in the top end of the case when the instrument is not in use.

A plastics earclip and a stethoscope= type headset are also included in the kit and a longer probe can be supplied if required. Complete with accessories, the instrument costs £6 6s. retail,

Hydraulic Pipe Couplings A COMPLETELY new range of pipe couplings for hydraulic installation work has been developed by Keelavite Hydraulics, Ltd., Allesley, Coventry. Known as the KR coupling, these are now being marketed after more than two years of testing.

KR couplings may be used with safety over and over again, without damaging or weakening the coupling or the tube. No special skill is required in assembly and standard spanners are all that are needed for tightening. The special design of the coupling ensures that the nut is not overtightened.

At present the couplings are available in all standard sizes up to and including 2-in. B.S.P. The 2-in, coupling is rated for 7,500 psi. (bursting pressure is about 22,500 p.s.i.), and the maximum pressure rating increases proportionally as/the size of coupling decreases. All the usual types of coupling are available-straights, elbows, tees, reducers—and a useful addition to the range is a break

away adaptor, which enables any standard coupling to be converted into a breakaway coupling. There is also a series of in-line non-return valves.

German Decorative Laminate THE marketing of Resopal decorative plastics laminates, which are made by H. Riimmler GmbH, Gross-Umstadt, West Germany, has been started in the U.K. Park Cross (Merchants), Ltd.. 69 Albion Street, Leeds, are the sole agents and Neville Long and Co. (Boards), Ltd., North Hyde Wharf, Southall, Middlesex, the main distributors.

Of the wide range of patterns and colours made, only 17 plain colours, 15 designs and patterns and 14 wood grains are at present available in this country. All are in a semi-matt finish except for a full-matt teak wood grain and black and white which are glossy finishes. There are two standard sheet sizes, Claudia which covers about 4 ft. by 9 ft. and Alwine approximately 2 ft. 7 in. by 5 ft. 8 in. Retail price is 3s. 2d. per sq. ft.

Plastics Publications THE industrial division of Osma Plastics, Ltd., 551 London Road, Isleworth, Middlesex, has recently published a brochure, "Reinforced Plastics in Industry," which explains the division's facilities and services. It also details applications for which reinforced plastics are ideally suited.

The various methods of reinforced plastics manufacture are explained and illustrated.

Also published by the same concern is a new four-page leaflet on Osmarail p.v.c. handrail. The range of 14 colours and two typical installations are illustrated in colour and a complete project specification is included.

Improved Body Filler ANEW body filler has been introduced by Plastics and Resins, Ltd., The Airport, Wolverhampton. -It is supplied in a premix paste form that is said to set in 30 mm. and yet remain soft enough to cut and work for up to 24 hours.

The new material is known as Metolux Easyfill and is said to have excellent bonding qualities, to spread easily and be capable of being applied in any thickness, hardening quickly to leave a non-porous surface.

Metolux Easyfill costs £2 12s. for an 8 lb. pack and £4 I8s. for a 16 lb. pack.
