WITH WOMEN making up just 1% of the 300,000-plus HGV drivers in the UK (see p18 for more), CM was delighted to hear from two recently qualiied young female drivers this week.

Eighteen-year-old Stacey Salmond (above) may be the youngest female PSV/ HGV Class 1 and 2 driver in the UK. Having passed her driving test at 17 in November 2009, she progressed to the car and trailer test, successfully completing it in May 2010. She then moved on to Category D (large bus) in December 2010, followed by the category C in February this year and category C+E in March.

While working for the family business, Salmond’s Of West Calder, which supplies coach hire and haulage, Salmond is attending college to complete her transport manager CPC.

“I thought it would beneit me to have the knowledge of the driver qualiication behind me as I want to be a transport manager,” says Salmond.

“It was never mentioned at school to me as an option but through my family it has always been something I’ve been intereted in. It’s a really good career to get into.” Meanwhile, 21-year-old Laurie Bartram (below) has recently passed her artic (C+E) with a full Driver CPC and NVQ level 2. She passed her rigid test last year and has ploughed through all the other modules that make up the Driver CPC.

Bartram’s mum Yvonne says: “Laurie wishes we had named her something different now.”
