A PROMPT by the North West Traffic Commissioner led two industry bodies to publish a 'best practice' guide to maintaining roadworthiness.

Beverly Bell approached the North Western Goods Vehicle Maintenance Liaison Committee about raising the standards of CV maintenance. The committee then commissioned the Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTE) to produce the Industry Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness.

Bell had expressed concerns that operators were concentrating on meeting the required minimum standards rather than aiming for 'best practice'.

"It is about adopting best practice for maintenance," she says. "If people follow this document they are less likely to be brought before a public inquiry, it's aimed at every operator, whether they run one truck or 1,000."

The guide covers operators' responsibilities for maintenance standards, inspections and organising a safety inspection programme, daily checks, defect reporting, inspection reports and more.
