Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Brian Weatherley • A lighter, multi-height Mark 2 version of the Roadrailer bi-modal semitrailer has been developed by the American chassis manufacturer Wabash together with its UK bodybuilding partner Boalloy.

Some 1,400kg has been shaved off the original fixed-height Roadrailer curtainsider trailer, with the Mark 2 now tipping the scales at 9,350kgdespite the adoption of the heavier Tautliner Multiheight body.

Weight has been lost by using aluminium decking, side raves and sideguards, along with revised chassis components.

Operating within the normal 4m Continental height limit the Multiheight Roadrailer's top-of-floor-toinside-of-roof cantrail height can be set at 1.95; 2.22 and 2.43m, allowing it to be used on different rail networks throughout Europe.

When running on the rails the Roadrailer trailer is first raised by deep stroke air bags before being lowered on to a rail bogie, thereby becoming the rail wagon. A separate bogie lift raises the roadwheels by 300m above the rails.

The Roadrailer has been developed to meet the growing interest in 44tonne bimodal operations, particularly for long-haul international work.

Transport Development Group is hoping to operate 87 multi-height Roadrailers while TIP is planning to use 100 fixed height versions. Boalloy is bidding to be the bodywork supplier for both orders which could be worth L1.5m.
