Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The first wide-spread rubber-sprung Norde bogies to enter service have been fitted to five tank semi-trailers for R. Rankin and Sons Ltd, of Teesside. They carry very large (6060 gal) general-purpose double-cone stainless steel tanks for Continental work and differ from the recently introduced standard Norde wide-spread bogie in having 6ft 8.75 in. axle spacing instead of 6ft lin. The normalspread Norde rubber-sprung bogie has a spacing of 5ft Oin.

Each axle has two inclined bonded-rubber sandwich spring units on each side, working in combined compression and shear to produce a progressive spring rate. These rubber springs connect the axle to bridgeunits, pivoted at one end to frame-mounted brackets. The other end of each bridgeunit is connected by shackles to a bell-crank lever which turns the vertical movement of the bridge-unit into a horizontal, longitudinal movement. Horizontal links connect the bell-crank levers of both axles on each side of the bogie. Rankin's semi-trailers are normally hauled on the Continent by Eutrans 'NV, of Rotterdam, and the trailers now carry a new orange livery bearing the names of both companies.

The tanks, built by Universal Bulk Handling Equipment Ltd, Burscough, have steam coil heating and are all 33ft long with 21n. glassfibre insulation and stainless steel cladding.
