IN its latest form, the hydraulic tipping gear, manufactured by Edwards Brothers (Tippers), Ltd., Springfield Garage, Bradford Street, Bolton, shows certain improvements upon the previous model. Chief of these is the employment of a single ram instead of two rams. As in the past, the plungers, valves, etc., are contained within the main oil box.
Another innovation is the formation of a recess, to accommodate the ram, in the front of the body, thus obviating the waste of apace hitherto caused by
the presence of the ram between the body and the back of the cab. It has been possible to make the improvement by building this part of the body of steel.
It will be observed that the oil-box unit is carried in trunnion bearings on the main-frame members, whilst a similar form of attachment is employed between the ram plunger and the front of the body. An interesting point is that a cylindrical casing which • telescopes over the ram cylinder protects this part of the gear from dirt.
Two pumps of the plunger type feed the ram. To lessen the labour of operating the apparatus, that discharging on the upward stroke of the handle is of smaller capacity than the other.
