Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Traffic Limits on Yorkshire Bridges. Mr. C. G. Mitchell, an inspector of the Ministry of Transport, recently held an inquiry at Wakefield into the applications by West and East Riding County Councils and the Borough of Leeds for prohibitions regarding the weight of vehicles crossing certain bridges. The following restrictions were sought 10-ton limit on the bridge spanning the River Calder, near the gasworks, Sowerby Bridge; a 2-ton limit on Kirby Hall (Little Ouseburn) Bridge, spanning the Ouse Gill Beck ; a 3-ton limit on Cawood Bridge, crossing the River Ouse at Cawood ; a 2-ton limit on Newlay Bridge, across the River Aire, the weights given being in respect of laden. or unladen vehicles and trailers.

On behalf of the Automobile Association, it was submitted that the Minister bad no power to make an Order for restricting the bridges in the terms applied for. It was added that the Minister could make an Order to prohibit or restrict vehicles as a whole, or of any specific class, but in the section that set out the definition of the different classes of vehicle the weight mentioned was unladen weight. The material section of the Act dealing with laden weight on bridges had not yet been brought into operation.

B22 For the West Riding County Council particulars of the bridges in question, the construction, and the weights the bridges were capable of bearing, were outlined.

On behalf of the Commercial Motor Users Association, Mr. E. Harrison asked the inspector to recommend the fixing of the highest figures of weight the bridges could carry.

After further evidence had been heard from different witnesses, the inspector said the bridges had been examined, and he would report to the Minister of Transport.

Salford's £1,000 Haulage Contract.

The gas committee of Salford Corporation recommends the acceptance of the tender of Mr. S. R. Teggin for the hire of lorries with drivers, for 12 months, as follow :-3-4-tanner, 55s. a day ; 2-tonner, 40s.; 30-cwt., 30s.; and 1-tonner, 30s. The total cost is estimated at £981.

More Trolley-buses for Birmingham. In consequence of the decision to abandon the tramways on the Coventry Road route, Birmingham Corporation is to remove the track and reconstruct the road at a cost of £19,900. Trolley-buses are to be operated on the route. Grant to Acquire Toll Rights Refused.

The Ministry of Transport has informed Cardiff City Council that, in view of the position of the Road Fund, no grant can be made to the council to assist in its proposed acquisition of the Penarth Road toll rights.

In view of this intimation, Cardiff Parliamentary Committee has deferred its proposed action in the matter, and the town clerk stated that, although the council's compulsory acquirement powers lapse in August next, be did not anticipate difficulty in obtaining a renewal of the powers.

One factor that helped the committee to its decision is the building of a new bridge and road at Leckwith Hill by Cardiff City Council and Glamorgan County Council, which will enable traffic to avoid the toll-gate route from Barry and Penarth to Cardiff.

New Road to By-pass Maidenhead.

Berkshire County Council has decided to proceed with the construction of the proposed Maidenhead by-pass, subject to a grant of 80 per cent. being received from the Ministry of Transport towards the estimated outlay of £220,000. The Ministry has already approved the liue to be taken by the road.
