Institute of Metals Journal.

The new issue of the Journal of the Institute of Metals, volume 44, is the last to appear in the form that has been familiar to engineers and inetallurgiats for over 20 years. It contains original papers and metallurgical abstracts in approximately equal proportions. In future, the papers will appear only in the half-yearly volumes, the abstracts being published as a separate volume once a year.

There are 17 scientific papers appearing in the volume under review, and the range of subjects dealt with is most comprehensive. The new volume contains a number of plates aird a host of

illustrations and is edited by Mr. G. . Shaw Scott, M.Sc. Its price is 31s. 64., and copies can be obtained from the Institute of Metals, 36, Victoria Street, London, S.W.1.

Stop-watches for Road-test and Similmu Work.

New Bus Garage for Glasgow.

Preparations fie: an early comMenceinett of_ the construction of Glasgow's new municipal garage at Knightswood, which is estimated to cOst 163,000; arO' well in hand. The work is expected to

take about nine months, and when completed the garage will enable the transport department to provide extended and later bus services in the Knightswood area. The site will occupy over seven acres and the depot will accommodate 200 double-deck buses.

Tenders are also to be obtained for extensions of the present municipal garage at Larkfield. The scheme includes the erection of workshops, etc., and a training school with a test track for bus drivers.

New Zealand Imports Analysed.

It will be seen from the table below that the number of complete vehicles and chassis imported last year into New Zealand declined to the extent of 2,749, or about 47 per cent. whilst the drop in value was £388,326, or about 44 per cent. An analysis of the returns shows that except for three from Gt. Britain, all the complete vehicles came front Canada.

As regards chassis, the Dominion's new import duties reduced the number imported from the United States from 2,993 in 1929 to 730 last year. On the other hand, those from Canada fell only from 1,648 to 1,474, whilst those' from Great Britain dropped from 507 to 269, • "other countries " supplying the rest.

It is interesting to note that whilst, as regards numbers the British share of the New Zealand imports was about 9 per cent., from the value point of view it amounted to over 25 per cent. of the total. Put in another way, the average value of. the British chassis and complete vehicles worked out at approximately 1450, as against about 194 for the Canadian machines. Satisfactory A.J.S. Passenger-vehicle Business.

A. J. Stevens and Co. (1914), Ltd., of. A New Form of Engine.

Mr. J. F. J. Malone will describe and demonstrate a new form of prime-mover at the Royal Society of Arta, John Street, London, W.C.2, on Thursday, June 4th, at 6 p.m. A discussion will follow the reading of the paper. The new engine derives its power from the expansion and contraction of liquids.

The company's publicity matter has always been of a comparatively high order, not forgetting the popular S.M.T. monthly magazine, and its latest booklet, "All Scotland by Motor Coach," affords a particularly comprehensive list of tour and excursion itineraries, covering the whole country. Favourite two-day tours from Edinburgh are those at £3 10s. (inclusive) to the Trossachs, Oban and Loch Lomond, or to Stirling, Aberdeen and the Dee Valley, whilst a three-day tour to Oban and the historic Isle of Iona at 15 10s. is good value. There is a

A Cleansing Fluid with Useful Properties.

A non-corrosive cleansing fluid which appears to have certain useful applications amongst motor-engineering concerns has been produced in France under the name of 1Viargoles Emulsionfacile, It is claimed that the new fluid is not inflathinable, does not give off unpleasant fumes and does not burn, whilst it possesses a further advantage in that the oils removed from motor parts that have been cleaned are unaffected by it and can be easily recuperated and again employed for a. variety

of purposes. The liquid is sold in bottles or cans, and before rtae is mixed with 10 times its volume of water. For storage and transport purposes, therefore, it does not occupy a hat7 of space.
