Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Together with vehicle safety body TOV SOD Automotive, the test team took a thorough look at the vehicles from all angles. From the level of workmanship on the chassis and driveline, it was clear to see that we had two established and high-quality vehicles on the 'ramps'. However they had their differences in service and maintenance.

For instance, if you want to get to the engine and gearbox on the Atego, you have to remove the hard plastic cover first. There's no such problem with the MAN. The examiners were keen on MANS large maintenance flap, which gives access to all important parts at the front. The air filter can be changed on the Memo with the cab tilted, although with the MAN you need tools as certain parts need to be removed first.

The engine-mounted filters on both vehicles are easily accessible and can be changed in a drip-free manner. While the front axle of the Atego still needs regular lubrication, the MAN's doesn't any more. One downside is that all the test connectors are hidden away under the chassis and have to be found before every inspection. The TGX and Actros both have better solutions to this. Also, the air dryers mounted next to the oropshaft aren't a hit with the examiners, as they tend to freeze up quite easily in the winter when there's no pit handy.

However both vehicles are easily examined for faults, with the diagnostic plug easily accessible in the cab. The Mercedes collects extra points for its various safety circuits and easily accessible central electronics, atthough the MAN doesn't differ much in this respect. There's no difference at all when it comes to the brakes. The visual test for the brake pads isn't that good and the experts didn't want to rely on the on-board indicator.

In conclusion, the MAN is more modern and easier to maintain, though the Merc, despite its age, is not that far behind.
