dating back to the early 1970s, under one root Laws on equal pay, age, sex, race and disability discrimination will be covered by this bill. This makes equality issues easier to understand and will , make it simpler for individuals to bring a discrimination claim.
Use public procurement to improve equality. Companies will find it easier to win public sector contracts if they can show they employ a diverse workforce.
• Introduce gender pay reports. All private sector firms employing more than 250 people may have to produce equal pay reports after 2013.
Make it illegal for employers to insist staff keep their rates of pay secret, which should help individuals win equal pay claims.
• Strengthen the powers of employment tribunals so that if an individual wins, say, an equal pay claim, the tribunal can award other workers at the company the same pay increase. At the moment, only the person winning a tribunal can claim benefits from a tribunal ruling, • Introduce a new duty to make sure that people from poorer backgrounds receive equal treatment.
• Encourage positive discrimination.
• Protect carers from discrimination.
