haulage very seriously. However, once a week our quirky correspondent, the Hawk, steps off his perch to take a humorous look at the industry to keep us all sane. If you have any off-beat yarns that illustrate the stranger, or sillier, side of the business, he'd like to hear from you. As a softhearted old bird, he's also happy to publicise charitable works— and is always interested in events for the vintage vehicles he drove as a fledgling. Hidden treasures

heroic team of Greenwich Direct Services binmen went above and beyond the call of duty recently when they retrieved a customer's rings from seven tonnes of rubbish.

Carlene McEwan from New Eltham had wrapped her three rings in tissue paper and put them in her handbag for safekeeping. Forgetting they were there, she emptied what she thought was rubbish from her bag into the bin.

It was only when she saw the dustcart disappearing down the street that it dawned on her what had happened. Back at the depot the brave lads began to boldly delve where lesser mortals would have feared to tread.

Strong stomachs were required as bags were split and congealed and rotting rubbish sifted. Supervisor George Webb reports: "One of the other lads picked up a tissue, he went to throw it and I grabbed his hand and the rings were in there. I couldn't believe we found them.'

Carlene was delighted; the binmen were later presented with the bar ough's Customer Care Award and a well earned bottle of Champagne.
