1973 deals with audible warning instruments. In this Regulation break-down vehicles are not among those which may be fitted with a siren—or a gong, bell, or two-tone horn.
QWe collect articulated tractive units from various manufacturers and, after fitting fifth-wheels and so on, ideliver them to our customer. Some of these vehicles are over 3 tons unladen and till now our fitters have had to have an hgv licence. Now that the new EEC driving licence regulations have been brought into force, do our fitters still have to have an hgv licence? A Although the EEC driv ing licence regulations have been introduced by The Drivers' Ages and Hours of Work Act 1976 they do not, in fact, govern hgv drivers' licensing. All these regulations say is that at 17 years of age a driver is restricted to vehicles of 3.5 tonnes gross, at 18 he may drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes gross and if he wishes to drive vehicles above that gross weight he must be at least 21 years old.
It is the intention that drivers of vehicles over 7.5 tonnes gross will need 'hgv driving licences in this country, for the former regulations requiring drivers of vehicles over 3 tons unladen are still in force. Your fitters will certainly need an hgv licence to drive the units you mention at least till the end of this year.
