A STRICT annual cash ceiling is expected to be announced soon for future payments of the new bus grant by the Department of the Environment.
Suggestions from the Confederation of British Road Passenger Transport that the grant should be reduced from 50 per cent are unlikely to be realised as this would need new legislation. Instead, a draft rationing scheme has been produced by the working group set up to consider the question (CM March 5). Members sitting on this represent the DOE, CBRPT, SMMT and local authorities.
The details of the group proposals are still under wraps at the moment until approval is obtained from all the members.
