• MPs who tried last week to find out the likely effects of Common Market entry on British transport got little satisfaction from Mr John Peyton, the Minister for Transport Industries.
Mr Alan Haselhurst (Tory, Middleton and Prestwich) wanted to know how road transport weight regulations in this country would be affected, and was told by Mr Peyton that regulations had not been harmonized in the EEC.
The effect of entry into the Community on British regulations would depend on what standard, if any, had been adopted by the Community. noted the Minister.
Mr Arthur Lewis (Labour, West Ham North) noted that the Council of Ministers of EEC was now considering proposals whereby the cost of constructing and maintaining roads, railways and inland waterways should fall on those using them.
Mr Lewis wondered to what extent these proposals would have to be adopted in this country, and with what costs to the users and the Government.
Mr Peyton replied that a memorandum containing such proposals, with a time scale of 10-15 years in mind, had been submitted by the Commission to the Council of Ministers on March 29 this year. Until the Council had adopted legislation to give effect to the Commission's proposals, they were not binding on member States.
