• Though heavier lorries are almost certainly on the way, it will be years before they go into service, unless present Government thinking changes, writes our Parliamentary correspondent.

When he hinted at heavier vehicles in a recent answer to a Commons question, Mr John Peyton, the Minister for Transport Industries, emphasized that nothing would happen until a comprehensive network of improved roads, embracing ports, had been provided. Assuming that he had in mind the target dates mentioned by his chief, Mr Peter Walker, the Environment Minister, whose roads programme was announced last week, this will not be until the 1980s.

Mr Peyton said that he intended to discuss with industry the possibility of heavier lorries, which would be restricted to "suitable roads".
