• The cost for commercial vehicles crossing the Mersey by road tunnel rose on Monday. Coincident with the opening to traffic of the new Liverpool-Wallasey tunnel the opportunity was taken to raise the toils for the old Liverpool-Birkenhead tunnel to the same levels as those for the new one, viz vehicles under 2 tons, 15p; between 2 and 5 tons, 40p; over 5 tons, 50p; under 2 tons towing a trailer, 30p; over 2 tons towing a trailer, 100p.
• Yesterday (July 1) Mr Graham Page, Minister for Local Government and Development, opened the I2-mile long section of M6 between the Penrith and Carlisle by-passes.
