WAGE rises are blamed for increases

V in fares sought by Edinburgh Corporation and the Potteries Motor Traction Co., Ltd. Another municipal undertaking which wants higher rates is Portsmouth.

An estimated £118,000 a year is expected from a proposal by Edinburgh Transport Committee to reduce the number of stages at present covered by the 2d, fare from three to two, Other measures designed to help meet the transport department's deficit of £151,900 include cutting the 5d. fare by Id. as an incentive to people in outlying districts, and the withdrawal of the 6d. early-morning return rate.

The abolition of workmen's fares and increased charges for adults' season tickets on the transport department's services have been suggested by Portsmouth City Council.

In the proposals put forward by P.M.T., one of the main suggestions is that early morning fares up to 6d. be increased by Id. They are also seeking approval to withdraw concessions given to shift workers.

Mr. C. W. Wroth, general manager, estimated that the proposals, if approved, would bring in approximately .£60,000 a year.
