BRITISH inventor FRED HOPE has been awarded top European awards for two labour-saving and safety devices.

Mr Hope, managing director of Hope Technical Developments Ltd, of Ascot, took his Scrutineer and Brake-mate inventions to the Brussels World Fair for Inventions and won gold medals. He also received the gold award for the best entry from Great Britain with Scrutineer and a medal of honour from the Royal Touring Club of Belgium for efforts to improving road safety with Brake-mate.

The Scrutineer device automatically checks airlines, brake functions, electrics and assists fitters with servicing and diagnostic . problems.. Brake-mate monitors the adjustment and lining wear condition of each brake automatically and gives visual warning of break efficiency.

After the Brussels success a member of Mr Hope's company went to the Fourth International Exhibition of Inventions and New Techniques at Geneva with the Scrutineer, which picked up yet another gold medal.

Mr Hope said : "We are of course highly delighted by this recognition. I was a transport operator for 20 years and all my inventions :spring from my experience during this time."

North Eastern British Road Services has appointed a manager to Consett Branch, County Durham. He is Richard Hopkinson Sykes who takes up his appointment this month.

After holding various management pasts, Mr Sykes joined Eastern British Road Services in June 1974 as manager of Derby branch.

James MacKay has been appointed manager of United Carriers Cheadle Heath, Stockport Depot. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Transport, with twenty years' experience in the transport industry. He succeeds Michael Howe who has recently been transferred to the company's new Bury depot.

Ronald Speakman has been appointed a director of Gupwell Transport Contracts Ltd., the Birmingham-based contract hire transport specialist.

Mr Speakman joined the company at its Leeds depot, where his father was foreman, in 1958 as a mechanic. He moved to the company's Bradford Street Birmingham head office in 1967, becoming general manager in 1972.

The National Association of Waste Disposal Contractors has appointed a new chairman— Anthony Shutes.

Mr Shutes, the director and general manager of Hales Containers Ltd, is a founder member of the Association and has served on all major subcommittees since 1968 including those which prepared the Conditions of Trading, Revised Articles of Association and the Provisional Code of Practice for the Disposal of Waste.

We record with regret the death of Gilbert H. Giddings, of G. H. Groves and Sons Ltd, Windsor Avenue, Merton Abbey .SWI9, aged 66.

Mr Giddings was chairman of SABHATA for eight years from 1966 to 1974 and will always be remembered for his skill in bringing the Alliance through its difficult years of change from the SBMA.

On the coach front this week C. R. J. Druce has been appointed planning and express services manager of GreyGreen Coaches Ltd.

He has latterly been express service and tours manager and has been with the company since 1959.

J. R. Card has taken over his responsibilities as tours manager. He has worked for the company since 1969.

We record with regret the death of Charles Bailey, of Turvey, near Bedford, who was a pioneer of passenger transport in the area.

Over 40 years ago Mr Bailey and his brother started their bus and coach business, Bailey's Coaches.
