• Following last week's lead story about strap failures, a number of operators warn that webbing load restraints will also fail if they are poorly maintained. Colin Ward, who edits our Any Questions page, says he has investigated four cases of strap failure in the past two years. "Many operators are unaware of the damage that can be caused by the central filaments of nylon webbing straps from hydrocarbons," he says.

• International hauliers embarking from Dover this week were directed onto weighbridges before boarding ship. Three 18m driveon drive-off weighbridges, worth over 2100,000, will be used to weigh up to 2,000 trucks every 24 hours.
