Hydraulic winch

T.T. Boughton and Sons Ltd has developed two new hydraulically driven recovery winches, suitable for vehicle mounting. Power for the winches, can be taken from any suitable vehicle or tractor hydraulic system or from power take-off and pump, The VH4 winch (with a 4000Ib line pull) and the VHS winch (80001b) both incorporate fully enclosed oil immersed working parts. All shafts are mounted on ball and roller bearings and the hydraulic drive prevents any possibility of shock load damage.

The winches, in either steel or alloy, can be mounted either behind the cab or on the front end.

A wide range of drum dimensions for the winches is available for special applications and reverse selection control with incorporated relief valve is an optional extra.

The Sentinel, a fire blanket made of texturized glass woven with "bulked" threads to give a texture like that of a rough towel, introduced by Tudor, is not friable and wears without shed ding. Up to 600deg C the blanket will not "harden-off", so it may be re-used.

The blanket can be hung on a wall in its transparent polythene pack. When the woollen release tapes are pulled the blanket leaves the bag and unfolds ready for use in smothering fires.

Solenoid valve

The Minijet solenoid valve from Martonair is designed for the direct control of small air cylinders or as a pilot operator for larger control valves, and with low power consumption is said to be suitable for use with transistorized circuits. It has a built in rectifier, making it possible for any particular coil to be used with either an ac or dc supply.

The unit has a spring-loaded, clapper-type armature fitted with vulcanized seals. When the coil is energized — it has a nominal power consumption of 2.5W — a U-type magnet raises the armature off the seat moulded in the base, and seals it against a seat in the moulding surrounding the magnet/coil assembly.

The terminal box is of the plug-in type.

The sub-base mounting obviates the need to remove pipe connections when servicing and makes it possible to mount the same basic valve on a variety of sub-bases for different purposes.

The M /1400 model is a single unit with M5 threads in all ports. The DM /1400 is intended primarily for gang mounting — up to six units can be connected together with tie rods and 0rings. The inlet port is drilled right through the sub-base, and has a in. BSP thread each side.

The units can be used in either a normally open or normally closed role, without changing the pipe connections.

Two types of manual override are available — a simple pushbutton version, and a push-twist type with screwdriver slot.

Operating pressure is from 0-10 bar, and a wide range of coil voltages can be supplied. Made by: Martonair, Twickenham, Middx.

Hacksaw blade

James Neill has introduced a high-speed steel hacksaw blade with a fully hardened cutting edge and spring-tempered back; the company says it is shatter proof. The size is 12in. x x .025in. with an option of 18 or 24 teeth per inch, Made by: James Neill (Sheffield) Ltd, Napier St, Sheffield S11 81-1B

Plug spanners

Removing awkwardly sited or difficult fitting spark plugs is, it is claimed, made easier with the Ives (Engineering) socket set adaptor or Sleevlok spanner.

The adaptor, which can be supplied with either a 0.375in. or 0.5in. square drive, features a universal joint and socket rubber insert, to obviate plug damage during unscrewing and hold the plug while it is being withdrawn The Sleevlok spanner features a similar universal joint adaptor secured to a long reach handle; a captive sleeve can be used to lock the universal joint straight.

The handle is cross-drilled to accept a tommybar. Both tools are available with sockets to international plug sizes.

Block indicator

Handy-size slide-rules enabling operators to determine how many Drikold blocks will be needed to keep their refrigerated cargoes chilled during transit, are available from ICI.

There are two rules, one for delivery vehicles the other for trunk vehicles engaged on long journeys. For the former the lefthand portion of the slide is used

to set body wall insulation, thic ness, body cubic capacity ar expected number of door opei ings. The number of blocks n quired to keep goods at 40d€ F during an eight-hour day, CE be read on the opposite sic from one of four windows, ear referring to an expected averat external temperature betwec 50deg F and 80deg F.

The other rule for trui vehicles is used in a similar ma ner except that door openir frequencies are omitted, alternative to setting insulatic thickness and body capacity is third scale which is set to ti vehicle heat leak, if known. T1 number of blocks required keep temperature either 40deg F or 10deg F for 24 hou is then read off against tr appropriate expected extern temperature.
