Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

on short-term hire by S. Buckley

• As from today (February 2) operators can obtain a Ford D1000 tractive unit for £12 a day (or £60 a week) plus is a mile. A Boden Mark II semi-trailer can also be hired at an extra cost of £3 lOs a day (or £17 lOs a week) plus 4d a mile.

This short-term hire facility is being provided by the Hertz Truck Rental Service, 289 Merton Road, London, SW18. Although at first to be operated as a pilot scheme centred on London, the scheme is scheduled to expand rapidly to provide a comparable service throughout the UK from the 15 Hertz Truck Rental Stations. A similar scheme introduced in Montreal last year necessitated the provision of over 60 American-sized tractive units within six months of its introduction.

Both rigid and articulated vehicles, including those built to customers' requirements, have always been available on contract hire from Hertz. Now it is considered that short-term hire will fill a gap in the market.

These 28-ton artics will have the Hertz black and yellow livery and the Crane Fruehauf sliding fifth wheel coupling will accommodate a wide range of semi-trailers. The rates quoted include oil and insurance and special arrangements can be made to use customers' own insurance cover.

The new service should benefit road transport operators in several ways.
