I would like to refer to the "Question and Answer" reply (CM. January 19) to the question: "I am 18 but intend to drive heavy goods vehicles when I am 21. Will I then need a different type of driving licence?"
It should have been pointed out that a person. holding a driving licence, upon reaching the age of 21 and wishing to drive a goods vehicle with an unladen weight in excess of 3 tons, cannot do so under his existing licence. The point here is that the driving of heavy vehicles is excluded by the licence.
It is necessary to return the licence to the local authority with a note to the effect that the holder has reached the age of 21 when the exclusion will be removed. If the licence has only a few months to run, it may be advisable to apply for the licence to be renewed in the normal way.
This matter should not be neglected as magistrates may rule that if a person is driving without a proper licence, he is therefore uninsured.
