Austin and Morris

ANEW system of designation has been announced for all Austin and Morris commercial vehicles. It comes into immediate effect.

B.M.C. state that their intention in adopting the new system (details Of which are given in the adjoining column) is to simplify model details which apply to documentation between manufacturer and customer whilst giving separately, within a recognized code system, a particular vehicle's complete specification. In addition, the new method is intended to be easily understood.

This is an analysis of the new coding: The type of cab is indicated by the design symbols " FF " forward control (high access), " WE " normal control, "FG " forward control (low access), " LD," " J4" or "J2," and "G2" Gipsy (Austin only).

The factory of origin will be shown by " K " or following the cab symbol, "K" denoting Longbridge or Bathgate, and " M " for Morris Commercial Cars, Ltd.

The nominal payload in cwt. will follow the above endings and will represent the payload for home market interpretation. In export markets it will be purely a code number such as, 140 for 7 ton (" 702 " will no longer be used).

In the case of the Austin and Morris tractive unit models the gross train weight, not the nominal payload, will be represented in cwt. thus: 240 for 12 ton g.t.w.; 360 for 18 ton g.t.w.
