TWO months' efforts by the Northern area of the Road Haulage Association to arrange an interview with the northern group of Members of Parliament, to discuss the revocation of permits. have not been successful.

Mr. R. Ewart, Labour M.P. for Sunderiaed South. stated that the Association's letter of last November.

asking for a meeting with the M.P.s.had been addressed to Mr. J. Jones. M.P. for Rotherham, who was not a member of • the group. He denied that the NLP s were afraid to meet the hauliers.

Mr. F. Milton. area secretary, has admitted that the Association's letter of last November had been addressed to Mr. J. Jones, instead of Mr. D. T. Jones.

He contended that the letter should have been passed on to the correct 'person. in addition, individual letters had been sent to the M.P.s concerned and efforts had been made to contact Mr. Ewart by telephone in the House of Commons. but without success. A letter sent to Mr. Ewart on December 19 was not acknowledged until January 16. The 12,1-1 A. had replied to this letter on January 17. but nothing further had been heard from the NI.P.s.•

S.A. TO MAKE TRAILERS

PRODUCTION of 5-ton trailers for South African Railways will shortly begin at the Johannesburg factory of J. 4--1. Plane and Co. (Pty.), 'Ltd. Assembly was to have started early this year, but there has been delay in the supply of parts from Britain. It is expected that 30 trailers will be made every 25 working days, but that the total order for 330 units will not be fulfilled before the end of the year. The managing director of the company has stated that although many . :omponents would have to be imported, about two-thirds of the materials used

would be manufactured in the Union. The assembly plant would cover 20.000 sq. ft.

A COMMITTEE of the Omnibus EA Passengers Protection Association has been formed at Bradford, with Mr. J. D. Neil Smith as chairman. It is hoped soon to form committees at Wakefield, Skipton. Barnsley and Sheffield. Hardepools Chamber of Trade has joined 0.P.P.A. as a corporate member.

PRIZES FOR NEAT LOGS

A COMPETITION, with cash prizes, .1"I has been held by Sherry and Haycock, Ltd., a Bournemouth timberimporting concern, among its drivers for the best-kept records, reports the Traders' Road Transport Association. Mr. B. G. Haycock. managing director. found that the scheme worked well and Mr. it. E. G. Brown, London and Home Counties Area secretary of the T.R.T.A., who helped to check some of the records, confirmed that the standards were extremely high.

150 MORE PERMITS LOST

ON February 28, more than 150 permits granted to hauliers in the West Country will be revoked. In Devon, Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, where these revocations will take effect, the Road Haulage Association has some 750 members.

ITALIAN OUTPUT RISES .

I T ALI AN motor-vehicle output from January to September, 1950, was 59.2 per cent., higher than in the comparable period of 1949. A total of 90,607 vehicles was produced, of which 13,527 were light vans. Exports. at 14,607 vehicles, showed a rise of 17.8 per cent.

THE South Yorkshire Area of the Road Haulage Association will hold its annual dinner and dance at the Station Hotel, Chesterfield, on March 2. Mr. F. F. Fowler, national chairman, will be present.
