costs, were imposed last week by Neweastle-on-Tyne magistrates at the conclusion of the bearing of 116 charges against seven coach operators for the alleged running of unlicensed express carriages to London. The hearing was reported in last week's issue.

Charges against Links Motor Services, Ltd., were dropped, as the prosecution offered no evidence. Walter Allan, trading as Messrs. Allan's Luxury Tours, Newcastle, who appeared on 52 charges, pleaded not guilty at the outset, but on the second day of the hearing changed his plea to guilty. He was fined £5 on each of the charges, plus £31 10s. costs.

J W. Taylor was fined £16 with £3 3s. costs; Albert Cadman, £36 with £10 10s. costs, and Messrs. Scarlet Band Motor Services £9 with £5 5s. costs. Messrs Ritz Motors, who also changed their plea from not guilty to guilty, were fined £66, with £15 15s. costs. Jane Tyman was fined £21, with £8 Ss. costs.

The case was the largest of its kind heard in the area. After the defendants had been found guilty, Mr. T. Campbell Wardlaw, defending council, said that the fault lay with the Licensing Authority. Allan had arranged tours in 1949 and he thought he could do the same M 1950. On the year's working he itad been out of pocket. Mr. Wardlaw addeo that the present NeweistleLondon service was inadeqt:ate.
