Steam-wagon Wheels.

The illustration at the foot of this page 611(»I'S the " Titan " type of wheel for commercial vehicles. These wheels are constructed in disc form, each consisting of six solid blocks, or segmental pieces, of hard wood, such as elm or teak; the timber is arranged with the grain running radially towards the centre of the wheel, which arrangement of the fibre presents the greatest resistance to wear and shock. The steel tire, as may be seen in one of the illustrations, has a number of internal teeth on its inside circumference; the length of alternate teeth is equal to the width of the wood body of the wheel, whilst the other teeth are made a little longer, so as to mesh with notches in the steel flange plates that are bolted to the sides of the wood. The steel tire is hydraulically pressed

en the wood body while cold. The wheels may be finished quite plain or they may be carved out so as to give the appearance of spokes, which may be picked out in colour: the latter style of finish gives to the wheel the general appearance of a spoked wheel: Castle and U.M.I. Accessories.
