COMMERCIAL MOTOR'S National Truck Week is on the road. As CM went to press on Tuesday the team was in Newcastle, at the International Centre for Life, following a busy day in Edinburgh's Festival Square.

The main reason for National Truck Week is to explain to the public just how important trucks are to everyday life. Were giving away a specially designed quiz and fact sheet to show the public how much they depend on our industry.

The fact sheets are being given away with bacon butties to 50 drivers caught in traffic each morning of NationalTruckWeek, and there's certainly been a positive response to this initiative β€”it took only eight minutes to distribute 50 bacon butties to drivers in Edinburgh.

We've also been handing out our bacon butties and truck fact sheets to local radio stations, as well as having press photo calls for local newspapers. The Herald and Edinburgh Evening Post both visited our Scottish road show.

The CM team was kept busy handing out freebies and fact sheets to passing pedestrians: some of them had a go on our model truck challenge β€” the fastest each day wins a remote control truck. CM editor Andy Salter says: "We're doing this because readers told us they wanted the public to have a more positive attitude towards the industry and to raise its profile as a vital part of everyday life in Britain. Everything we're doing for National Truck Week is designed to achieve that."

Jim Gilmour, Driver Hire's HGV training co-ordinator in Scotland, is driving one of our three road show trucks. Driver Hire, one of the UK's biggest driver agencies, is supplying drivers for our road show throughout the week.

Gilmour says: "It's brilliant that someone has taken the initiative on this β€” doing it for an industry that's been the whipping boy for a long time. If anything can encourage more people to enter the industry it has to be a good thing."

There are two more road shows this week:in Guildhall Square,Portsmouth on Thursday (2 December) and Market Square, Dover on Friday (3 December). The National Truck Week roadshow will be there from 10am to 3pm and we'd be delighted to see you.
