SCOTTISH DRAYMEN have threatened a series of one-day strikes over a proposed pay deal because it would leave new recruits up to £3,500-a-year worse off.
The action by nearly 100 drivers at Scottish Courage will disrupt brewery deliveries to 2,700 Scottish pubs in the run-up to Christmas, Pat Rafferty, Transport & General Workers Union regional industrial organiser, says the company's 2.6% offer would put existing drivers on £23,149 a year.
But new recruits would start on £1,500-a-year less in the central belt and £3,500 less in the north of Scotland, "The company says they have looked to see if they are paying the market value for the workforce," says Rafferty. "We have a responsibility to past generations who negotiated these terms and conditions and we have a responsibility to future generations to ensure these terms and conditions are kept."
The strikes are scheduled for 8, 11,15 and 18 December.
A spokesman for the company stresses that only Scottish pubs are threatened by the action; he concludes that negotiations are continuing.
