tread with interest Mr Ian Hetherington's letter regarding the skills shortage of HGV drivers and his valiant efforts to attract young people into the industry (CM11 Nov).
My main concern is what happens to all this funding.! believe that the ESC allocates around 16,000 to train each young driver.
My company is at the sharp end providing the practical HGV training. We are paidf1 ,000 for each pass, irrespective of how many tests the candidate takes to gain his HGV licence.
Over the past 12 months we have achieved 10 passes and with re-tests etc have only just broken even.
I feel the funding should be more evenly distributed to those who are providing the practical training.
So where, exactly, has the other £5,000 gone?
