John Prescott's comments this week that he is determined to help make the haulage sector competitive are very welcome. The possibility of reduced VED; the intention to restrict the introduction of congestion charging and to ringfence the funds it generates for the road infrastructure; and the announcement that the Highways Agency is to look at accelerating a programme of road improvements and bypasses all come as icing on the cake.

And all this just days after the Chancellor finally jumped off the fuel duty escalator. So what's going on?

A gear change indeed, and a very welcome one. So who cares whether or not this is all the result of a feared backlash from motorists prior to the looming election, rather than a road-toDamascus conversion about the importance of Britain's haulage sector?

And with the CIT now poised to recommend 44-tonners for general haulage, this could be a Christmas to remember...all that remains now is for Brown to do the decent thing over fuel duty in his next Budget.

• For many years, part of the Commercial Motor pre-Christmas ritual has involved the magazine's Christmas card. One of our artists comes up with a truck-oriented design; we have the cards printed, pass them round the office for signing, and they join the millions of "courtesy cards" exchanged by businesses.

But not this year. Instead of spending money on cards, we're getting back to the real spirit of Christmas by sending the money to where it will do more good: to our adopted charity, the Children's Trust hospital at Tadworth, Surrey.

We hope all our friends in the industry will agree that the kids at Tadworth need our cash more than you need our Christmas cards!
