• Durham truck driver Allan kirtley has been given a four-month jail sentence for the attempted evasion of nearly £10,000 excise duty and VAT on some 80,000 cigarettes.

Kirtley, who was working for KC European of Bristol, pleaded guilty after 77,000 cigarettes were found under the floor of his trailer. When stopped at Dover Eastern Docks on 21 November he admitted buying the cigarettes for only E2,749.

Kirtley was also convicted of drink-driving and given a further month's imprisonment, to run concurrently.
