Using a replacement vehicle following a breakdown when there was no margin on the 0-licence has cost a West Wales operator E755 in fines and costs.

Darrin Thomas, trading as Coast to Coast Caravans, of Haverfordwest, pleaded guilty to using a vehicle without the authority of an 0-licence before IJanelli magistrates.

The court heard that Thomas's replacement 32-tonner had been stopped in a routine check at Gross Hands in May and that it should not have been used without displaying an 0-licence identity disc.

For Thomas, James Williams said one of his three vehicles had broken down in Leeds. Thomas spoke to the Traffic Area Office in Birmingham and got the mistaken impression that he could put the replacement lorry on the road before the 0-licence identity disc arrived. The authorisation on the licence had now been increased to five vehicles so Thomas now had two spare replacements in case of a similar emergency arising in the future.
