'shocking' fleet

A PERTHSHIRE haulier was ordered to remove one vehicle from the road and had two others taken off for two months when he appeared before the Scottish Licensing Authority at Perth last week.

LA A. B. Birnie, who pre sided, described the case as "a shocking story," particularly • from a man who had twice previously appeared before the LA.

Managing director of D. T. Campbell (Meigle) Ltd, Thomas Cambell, had been called before the LA to explain why his licence should not be revoked, suspended or curtailed.

A number of defects had been reported on his vehicles.

He told the LA that his lorries were often used on building sites and on pipeline contracts. Cuts on tyres and loosening of the suspension had ensued.

His agent, Andrew Hunt, said that Mr Cambell accepted that if his vehicles were being used on building sites, once-amonth inspections were not enough.

He would be happy to have more frequent inspections and intended to employ an additional mechanic.

Giving his decision, which will take effect from December 31, Mr Birnie said frequent warnings had not had the desired effect. If Mr Campbell appeared again his licence might be revoked altogether.
